Eating, drinking, talking
Anyone who goes into a restaurant or a bar is plunging into a world of its own. Once we enter the restaurant, we are met by an incomparable mixture of voices, fragments of conversation, background music and the clatter of plates and cutlery. All these sounds create an acoustic backdrop that surrounds us like a protective envelope. Anyone who spends an entire evening in a restaurant can follow the acoustic patterns of the quality and level of these mixed noises. There are great halls and bistros the size of small rooms: these different dimensions can be picked out by ear with your eyes closed. And of course it sounds different when almost everyone is speaking Italian or Chinese. Is it possible to hear where one is located geographically or socially?

Wer ein Restaurant oder ein Café betritt, taucht in eine eigene Welt ein: Stimmen, Hintergrundmusik und das Klappern von Tellern und Besteck bilden eine akustische Kulisse, die die Gäste wie eine schützende Hülle umgibt. Im Laufe des Abends verändern sich Qualität und Pegel der Geräuschmischung. Es gibt vornehme Restaurants, in denen leise gesprochen wird und die Kellner jedes Geräusch vermeiden, und andere, in denen es richtig laut wird. Es gibt große Säle und zimmergroße Bistros: Die unterschiedlichen Dimensionen lassen sich mit geschlossenen Augen erhören. Und natürlich ist es ein Unterschied, ob die Gäste französisch oder chinesisch sprechen. Kann man hören, an welchem geografischen oder sozialen Ort man sich befindet?
